where are you
Then of thy beauty do I question make,
That thou among the wastes of time must go,
Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake
And die as fast as they see others grow;

Wow, if I would not see this popular thread I would not believe that someone writes something here, because I thougt people are too lazy to translate statements of the other people.
English was my favourite school subject, but now we've got a teacher who's just talking american english and I hate how he pronounces the words.
What do you like best, British English or American English?

(I think there are many mistakes in here, so I would be grateful if somebody would call attention to that)

I am, so also hey. ^^
My problem is that all of my classmates pronounce the words the american way and he doesn't care if my sentences are grammatically right, he say's I must write and pronounce words the other way, I don't know what to do, but I won't give up, because I hate it, when this guy is right and with this thing I think it's unfair.

Sad enought, most of the time it's one of us asking if anyone else is here if there is a new post in this thread at all. Now there seem to be 3 people arround, thought :D

4, if you count me, Harrik

By the way, Isabella - I've never met a teacher who spoke really British or American - they all sounded more German than anything...

Your teacher can't make you pronounce the words American - if you want to speak British he should have to teach you that.

You're right I can't really say he speaks American English but he was in America for a few years and because of this he thinks he is speaking American English and make us think it, too, because no one of us has ever been in America and listened to a national American.
I know it sounds strange, but he really thinks he would speak like an American because he has been there.
The worst on this thing is, that I am just thinking I would forget the BE pronouncing of the words if I speak AE in our education, because I don't speak English at home or somewhere else, just here and here I don't speak the words loud. xD

The majority of my class wants to speak AE, that's the problem it's like peer pressure.

Perhaps you could train BE by reading English books loud - when I came to university I had a very strong German accent, but I got tought what's important about BE and I read whole books loud - and now I at least I passed the pronunciation exam :D

Your teacher should not to teach you the way the majority wants to speak but what every single student wants. It is not important which kind of English you speak, it's important to speak it like a native speaker.

I think I'll never speak like a native speaker but I am satisfied when I can write BE, because in written tests he can't ban me from writing BE (that's what I know about it, one of my former teachers told me) and I think it's like a bleam of hope.

But how could he speak AE and BE at the same time?
If there would be just the alternative to pronounce every second day the words different, I would prefer speaking AE to this mix.

He hasn't to speak AE and BE at the same time - but he has to give you the chance to speak BE, and he should tell you what is the right pronunciation.

Although I learned speaking BE, or to be exact, RP (that's a form of BE in London) I know how the words should be pronounced in AE. But I would be at a loss if I were to teach Scottish or Australian - or some weird Carribean accent. But I don't think anyone wants to learn those from me

The differences in spelling are not that important - I have no problem to switch to AE there. But if someone wants to talk me American... single words are OK, but not sentences.

But it's weird for me to speak BE if all the others are speaking AE.
Anyway in the next lesson I'll tell him what you told me if he grumps on my english.
I have to go :P bye
